Day 182: Happy Hair

7 Jul

I am a big fan of fun and funky hair things. (As you can see here, here, here.)  So I was browsing swap-bot a few weeks ago, and there it was…..a swap made especially for me!

How could I resist that?  I signed up and anxiously awaited my partner assignment.  And what a great partner I got!  She’s young and funky (like moi).  I had a blast making her swap package.

Without further ado….

The first piece I made is a clustered flower headband in shades of black, white, and silver.

Then I made a pair of red poppy bobby pins.

The last piece I made is this funky little pouf  It’s attached to a clip like most of my other flowers.  I think it would look adorable tucked behind the ear or adorning a messy updo.  I hope she likes them!

Day 165: Beads Beautiful Beads

20 Jun

One of my summer goals is to reboot my Etsy site.  I make so much stuff…I have to get rid of it somehow…and if I can make some $$ on the side…:-D

I got to work today making a fabulous beaded necklace and earring set.  I know I tend to say this about everything I make, but this really is my best yet!  Part of me doesn’t want to give it up for sale…

ooooh aaaaah

It’s glass and ceramic beads with silver tone findings.  Check out the matching earrings!

and together

I hope someone out there likes them…cuz I could really use the $$!

Days 145-148: I’m baaaaaaaack!

3 Jun

Hello there!  Good to see you.  It’s been a while.

So the week from hell is finally over.  Nothing bad happened…I’ve just been super incredibly busy with stuff.  I started a yoga class that will last through the summer.  I’m seeing a new doctor to help with my back issues.  And today was the last teaching day of the school year!!!!!!!!

With everything that’s been going on, I just couldn’t find the time to post.  I did make stuff though.  Lots of giggles happening here!  First up is another funky pillbox hat.

Believe it or not, I actually made this one with my club kids.  They thought it was hysterical.  Theirs came out pretty cute too.  Will I ever wear this one?….probably not.

except maybe this once...

Eccentric much?

Anyway…so that was Tuesday’s giggle.  Wednesday I was just too busy to do anything.  Yesterday’s giggle is a fun photo…

It's alive!!!!!!

Remember my herb garden?  It’s only been a week, and this sh!t’s growing like crazy!  I have no idea which of the herbs those are, but I can’t wait to find out!  I’m looking forward to some homemade caprese salad this summer!

Last of all is today’s giggle.  I’ve been working so much with my curvy mermaids lately….it was time for a bit of a change.  Today, I chose to paint something else…

Isn’t he cute?!!!!!!  I think the next painting will be a curvy mermaid with her pet catfish.  🙂

Day 123: Biker babe!

10 May

It’s Tuesday again…time for my accessories club!  This week, the girls and I made funky cuff bracelets like this one from forever ago.  The girls made frilly pink lacy creations with buttons and flowers and glitter.  Mine, on the other hand, was pure biker chic!

vroom vvrrrrrrrrrooooooooooooom

I love me some studded black “leather!”  It reminds me of my edgier days….

totally bada$$

Don’t mess with me!  Those cuts and scars on my hand…they’re not from the cats..no no…they’re from a bar brawl…a really bad one…with big men…double my size…3 of them really…yeah…but they didn’t stand a chance…oh no..because my fists are deadly weapons…oh yes they are…you better watch out!  😉

Day 113: The gift of jewelry

30 Apr

Last week, my grandmother asked me to make a jewelry set for her friend’s birthday.  As per yesterday’s post, I procrastinated.  Really, I just got sidetracked and demotivated (is that a word????) by my friend’s passing and all the darkness I’ve been feeling.  It happens sometimes.

Yeah, well….Marion’s birthday is TOMORROW, so I had to kick it in gear and make her gift pronto!

Here it is!!!!

It’s a lovely jewelry set consisting of a necklace, bracelet, and earrings in varying colors of green, blue, and gold.  I used blue agate for the main stones and fancy jasper and glass for the supporting beads.  I think the whole thing came out rather nice.

aaand a close up!

This picture is a bit blurry, but you can see the pretty colors in the stones.  I love using natural materials in my jewelry.  It has a much nicer weight and feel.  Also, it’s a way to connect with nature on a daily basis.  Okay….I’ll stop with the hippie nonsense now.

I really hope Grandma’s friend likes it!

On another note…..that’s the awful coffee table mentioned in my 29 before 30 list.  The thing is a true antique (I think it was my Great Aunt’s from the 50’s or something) and it’s all scratched and water stained.  Any suggestions on refinishing it?  I’ll take all the help I can get!

Day 85: Ring around the rosie, headband full of posies…

3 Apr

I’ve gotten really bad at posting on time…Bad Marissa!  I must make more of an effort to post every day.  I promise that I’ll try.

Anyway…a few days ago I had this great idea for a big peony type hair flower.  I saw one in a magazine or something, and the idea just got stuck in my head.  I took the idea and ran with it.

Here’s the finished product…

There she is all big and frilly.  I made her from some pale purple satin and white eyelet chiffon, and she’s attached to a grey ribbon-covered headband.  I liked her so much that I made another one…

yay blue!

This one is a deep royal blue satin with white tulle on a spring green band.  I have no idea when or if I’ll wear these, but I loved making them!

and together

On a side note…I just love these photos.  These are completely au natural (aka no photoshopping or manipulation of any kind) and the lighting is gorgeous!  And so is my crystal vase and the uber cool crystal soil beads.  I bought them at that lame St. Patty’s day fair a few weeks ago, and so far, so good.  They kept a mixed bunch of flowers looking great for 2 weeks, but didn’t fare so well with a bunch of irises.  They sure do look pretty though, and they match my fabulous tablecloth!

Day 67: Rainbow Pride

15 Mar

Every year, my school participates in a homeroom competition where each homeroom is assigned a color.  The contest is to see which homeroom will best represent that color in their attire.  The kids and teachers really get into it and have a great time.  They come up with all kinds of wild costumes (orange hula skirts anyone?).  It’s such a fun day.  The best part is that all the money the kids pay to participate goes to charity.  The worst part is that I don’t have a homeroom.  😦

I’m certainly not implying that I want a homeroom.  I’m just sad because…well…what color do I wear?  I try so hard not to play favorites, but what can I do?  If I can’t pick just one color…..well, I’ll just have to wear them all!!!  My outfit consisted of a white shirt, grey pants, blue shoes, purple scarf, and many rainbow accessories…one of which I made Tuesday and is the subject of this post.

Behold the rainbow headband!

I found this great rainbow ribbon and AC Moore and had to pick it up.  It’s so cheery and peppy….like something a 5 year old would wear!

NOT 5 years old!

This headband is over the top, even for me….but I got a days worth of giggles out of making and wearing it!

This fabulous rainbow headband can be yours for the price of 1 interesting comment on this post!  I’ll randomly select someone on March 31 to be the lucky recipient.  (make sure I have some way to contact you!)  Good luck!

Day 65: Luck o’ the Irish

13 Mar

I love holidays.  I love celebrating holidays.  I love decorating for holidays.  I love holiday parades.  It doesn’t really matter to me whether the holidays are from my culture or not, I still participate.  I love any reason to party!

That being said, St. Patty’s Day is one hell of a party!  Between the parades and the festivals and the pub crawls…There’s always something going on this time of year.  Today, I went to a St. Patrick’s Day festival over at the local college.  They had Irish music, dancing, food, crafts, the whole 9 yards.  To be honest, it was kinda lame…except for the crazy step dancing.  That stuff just blows my mind!

The fair got me in a festive mood, so today’s giggle is a little bit o’ green to wear on Thursday.

You'll never get me lucky charms!

I made him from polymer clay.  I think he’s pretty cute.  Scott made one too, but his is the stuff of nightmares…or bad horror movies…

Yeah…like that one.

Day 64: Anyone out there?

12 Mar

Today was a great day.  Scott and I went out east to visit the wineries.  Then, we stargazed over at the Custer Observatory.  I’ve never looked through a real telescope before, and I have to say that it was pretty amazing.  I could see every tiny nook and cranny on the moon, not to mention stars and nebulae that I didn’t even know existed.  I could clearly see things that are hundreds of thousands of light years away with the scopes they had there.  I was pretty awe-struck.

I’ve always had an interest in space(the final frontier).  I grew up in a Star Trek household, and I frequently imagined Vulcans or some other race landing on Earth.  It just doesn’t seem plausible that we are the only lifeforms in existence.  We are a tiny speck inside an infinite universe.  How could we possibly be alone in all this?

That being said, I thought it time to “reach out and touch someone.”  I checked swap-bot this morning and found my mailing information for my next swap!  Time to get to work!  For this swap, I’m supposed to make whatever I make best and mail it to my assigned person.  I checked out her profile and got lots of great ideas.  What did I make?  Hair flowers of course!

This first flower is lavender and black lace on a black ribbon wrapped headband.

ooooooh ahhhhhhhh

Too cute!

The chick’s profile said she liked purple, so I went with it.  It also said she liked 50’s vintage style, so….

It's a pin!

What’s more 50’s than a cheery cherry print?  I made a cute flower that has a pin back AND a hair clip!

It's a hair clip!

It’s definitely more casual and funky than the other one I’m sending her.  I hope she likes them.  I may have to make copies for myself…

Days 58 and 59: Up-cycled Bracelet and Baby Blossom Beanies

7 Mar

Yesterday was crazy.  The hubs and I had a million errands to do in the pouring rain, so when our friend Kim invited us over for dinner, we jumped at the chance.  Unfortunately, that means that I got home too late to do any thoughtful blogging.

Kim is a crafty person too, so we usually make something fun when we get together.  It’s so nice to be able to bounce ideas off of someone (and to have access to their bead and craft stash)!  I made this fabulous bracelet after dinner at Kim’s.

The only decent pic I got!

I used a vintage “gold” chain I got at the thrift store, black beads, and this great quartz bead that I’ve been dying to use for a while now.  I love it so much I wore it to work today!

Today’s giggle is a bit different.  I went to the fabric store after work to pick up some things and came across these adorable little baby beanies.  I almost bought them too until I realized that I’d already bought them!  I’ve been trying to build my inventory for the spring craft fair season and figured these would fit right in.

So unbelievably adorable!  They make me wish I had a little girl to wear them!

I picked up this awesome embroidered tulle at the fabric store on clearance.  I think it’s so sweet with the yellow hat.

I used a funky retro print for the flower on the pink beanie.  I really hope someone likes them.  I would if I were a mommy!
