Flower Power!

30 Dec

Ah the fabulousness that is Christmas vacation!  It’s one of the few perks of teaching.  Usually I just lounge around the house doing nothing, but not this week!  I’ve been “remodeling” to make room for the baby!

So I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this before, but hubby and I live in a tiny 1 bedroom apartment.  We downsized a few years ago to save some money and give us a reason to eliminate a bunch of the crap we’d accumulated over the course of our lives.  Living in a small space poses lots of challenges (obviously) but I’ve come to enjoy it.  It’s less to clean and forces me to be creative with furniture and decorating.  It’s taken a while, but we’ve made it work for us.  We’re comfortable here and gonna stay for a bit longer.  But what about the baby?

I did some Ikea hacking this week to create a “room” for the baby.  Basically, I used some old Aneboda wardrobes we had hanging around and build a “wall” that split our bedroom in two.

The wardrobes are bolted to the wall and each other for safety. There's no chance of tipping here!

The other side of the “wall” is for the baby.  I couldn’t very well leave it nasty old press-board, could I?  Wallpaper time!

Okay…it’s not perfect.  Even though I put up wall liner on the crappy cardboard back of the wardrobes, the paper didn’t want to stick to the edges.  I used some corner molding on the edge that’ll be bumped up against most.  I haven’t decided if I” edge the rest of it.

So there you have it… this week’s project.  I bought the wallpaper online.  I fell in love with the pretty flowers!

And look how nice it is next to the rocker!

Days 120 and 121: Mermaid Mama

9 May

It’s Mother’s Day…do you know where your mother is?  I do.  She’s at home probably sleeping.  I always thought Mother’s Day was a funny kind of holiday.  Why do people need a specific day of the year to celebrate their mom???  Granted, I’m not a mom celebrating type of person either, but really…Another holiday designed by Hallmark and the jewelry companies!  Did you realize that you’re a terrible husband/child/grandchild/baby daddy if you didn’t buy Mom something sparkly and expensive?????!

Yeah…I just don’t buy into that consumer bulls#&t.  Still, everyone else does so……I bought my mom something fun instead of some sentimental “World’s Best Mom” diamond accent necklace or flower bouquet that’s marked up 200% just because of Mother’s Day.  I hope she likes it.

Today’s giggle is something I’ve been working on for a while now.  In honor of Mother’s Day, I present….Mermaid Mama!

She’s painted on glass just like this one with a collaged background.  Isn’t she sweet?

Days 58 and 59: Up-cycled Bracelet and Baby Blossom Beanies

7 Mar

Yesterday was crazy.  The hubs and I had a million errands to do in the pouring rain, so when our friend Kim invited us over for dinner, we jumped at the chance.  Unfortunately, that means that I got home too late to do any thoughtful blogging.

Kim is a crafty person too, so we usually make something fun when we get together.  It’s so nice to be able to bounce ideas off of someone (and to have access to their bead and craft stash)!  I made this fabulous bracelet after dinner at Kim’s.

The only decent pic I got!

I used a vintage “gold” chain I got at the thrift store, black beads, and this great quartz bead that I’ve been dying to use for a while now.  I love it so much I wore it to work today!

Today’s giggle is a bit different.  I went to the fabric store after work to pick up some things and came across these adorable little baby beanies.  I almost bought them too until I realized that I’d already bought them!  I’ve been trying to build my inventory for the spring craft fair season and figured these would fit right in.

So unbelievably adorable!  They make me wish I had a little girl to wear them!

I picked up this awesome embroidered tulle at the fabric store on clearance.  I think it’s so sweet with the yellow hat.

I used a funky retro print for the flower on the pink beanie.  I really hope someone likes them.  I would if I were a mommy!
