Heaven is…

11 Dec

Scott and I had an interesting conversation this weekend.  You see…I love the Christmas season.  I mean, I really freakin’ love it.  I love the lights and the music and the smell of pine needles and the goodwill towards men, etc. etc.  It’s a near perfect holiday.

So there we were on Saturday evening running some errands.  I’d had a miserable day and desperately needed something to lift the gloom.  What better way to break through the darkness than a Christmas Light Show?!!!  Girl Scouts of Suffolk County to the rescue!

We waited in line FOREVER, but finally got to see some lights.

yay Snoopy!

After the lights, there’s a place to stop for cocoa and pictures with Santa….which got us talking about the whole Santa Claus thing.  What ever will we do with the little one as far as Santa goes?   How does one answer when a child asks why Santa visits all her friends but fails to come to her house?  “Sorry honey, but Santa only visits goyim.”??????

And what about that?  What about the whole “Jew” thing?  Scott and I were both raised Jewish by tradition, but faith never really factored into anything.  This seems to be pretty common in this day and age, but where does it leave us with raising a family?  Do we raise the kid as we were raised, blindly following traditions without any belief or meaning?  Or do we teach our offspring to consider all possibilities and think for herself, even though that may lead to an abandonment of tradition?  Is it better to be a sheep or a nomad, searching all possible avenues to God?  What about life and death?  What about heaven or the lack thereof?  If I can’t answer these spiritual questions myself, how can I possible explain them to my child?  Deep thoughts…

So I did what I normally do when faced with a deep spiritual question…I consulted my cats.  Penny answered me simply.

Day ????????: My return to blogland…

6 Dec

Yeah yeah yeah…I know I dropped off the planet for a while.  There’s just been so much going on and I lost my bloggy momentum…let’s call it “blogmentum!”  So blogmentum is gone but giggly goodness is still up and running. I just don’t seem too keen on the documentation aspect of things.  Granted, it doesn’t help that I’ve been using a POS computer for the past few months that couldn’t play solitaire well let alone handle internet blogging or uploading of pictures.  I finally got a new machine, but I haven’t yet gotten to know the ins and outs of it.  Here’s hoping it’s better than Dell!

Anyway…So I’ve been a busy bee lately.  Scott and I have been purging a lot of crap to make room for the baby.  We’ve carved out a little nursery nook in our bedroom.  I’ve got plans to wallpaper sometime over xmas break, and then we’ll order furniture and such.  In the meantime, I’ve been knitting and sewing up a storm.  My favorite project so far…..

Hello Dolly!!!!!

Isn’t she cute?!  I did all the sewing and embroidery by hand.  I think she came out fabulous.  She reminds me of my own childhood doll…sad little one-eyed Lucy…

See the resemblance?

That’s what a dolly looks like after 30 years of love.  Kinda gross…

May this little lady see just as much love!

And yes…I’m obviously having a girl!

Day 169: Packing packing packing packing

24 Jun

Yeah….no giggle today.  😦  Dear hubby and I are going on a little trip to celebrate our anniversary.  So instead of giggling and art-making, I’ve been packing and cleaning the place.  Not fun…

I’m sure plenty of giggles will be had over the next week!  I’ll post when I get back.

Days 166-168:

23 Jun

My firsts week off from school hasn’t been all it’s cracked up to be.  I don’t know what the deal is lately, but I’ve been all wacky and insomniac-ish.  I have gotten a lot done though!

One of my summer goals is to reboot my etsy site.  I’ve had one for a while, but it hasn’t been active in over a year.  I decided to try again with a new name, new look, and new focus.  It’s still not up and running, but I did manage to make a shop banner that I’m reasonably happy with…

It still needs some tweaking, but I’m happy with the overall feel of this one.  And it went through many incarnations, let me tell you!

I finally got around to painting the cat lady mermaid I drew up a few days ago, too!

I really like the purple/gold combination.  Now, I need to do those backgrounds….

Last, I will leave you with a photo that I took this morning.

That just never gets old…

Happy giggles!

Day 161: Giggle Gift

16 Jun

Today’s giggle is a gift.  Two years ago on the 28th of June, I married my best friend.  Scott knows me better than anyone, and because he knows me so well, decided to give me my anniversary present early!!!

I’d post pictures of it, but I’m having way too much fun messing around with all the features.  It’s all fancy shmancy and sh!t.  I’ll post my favorite shots tomorrow.

Days 145 – 147: Hell on earth

2 Jun

This is a filler post.  I’ve got so much going on right now that I have no time to write a real post.  I feel like I haven’t sat down in days.  Still giggling.  More later

Days 132 and 133: Traveler’s Anonymous

20 May

Lots going on….Let me sum up.

First of all, apparently tomorrow is the end of the world according to these crazies…  This has totally been the hot topic of conversation lately!  All  my students have been talking about it…7th graders are scared sh*tless, while 11th graders are hoping for a zombie apocalypse a la call of duty!  Insane!  I, for one, don’t think whatever divine being there is would let us lowly humans know if the end was near (or “nigh” as the crazy street corner people say).  Let’s think about this, shall we?  If you were G-d, and you were going to wipe the slate clean, would you let the creatures you were going to kill know?????  Especially if your whole point in doing so was to “save” the righteous and make everyone else suffer?!  I’d like to think that G-d, whomever he/she/it may be, would keep that information to himself.  Regardless, people have been speculating for hundreds if not thousands of years when the world would officially “end” and no one’s got it right yet.  Won’t these people feel real stupid when they wake up Sunday morning to find that all’s well?

Besides, I’m kinda tired of hearing this song….

So I’ve been working on a drawing based on this “end of the world ” theme, but I’m not ready to show it yet.  Later.

What I am ready to show is my lame attempt at culinary excellence!  I pride myself on being a world traveler.  Every chance Scott and I get, we are off to some exotic or unusual locale.  Unfortunately, cash has been tight lately…so we haven’t gone on many trips.  Instead, we live vicariously through TV personalities on the Travel Channel.  The only time I even turn on the TV is to watch reruns of Bizarre Foods or No Reservations!  Tonight I made a Bizarre Foods inspired dinner.

Some time ago, Andrew Zimmern took a trip down to Trinidad.  He ate all kinds of weird and crazy stuff there, but it was the “bake and shark” that really caught my interest.  I mean really…..who doesnt’t love a fried fish sandwich?!  I decided to make my own version tonight.

I followed this base recipe, but added my own twist here and there (whole wheat flour anyone?)

I made the fry bread from scratch, and it honestly wasn’t worth the trouble.  I’m not very good at frying things….I don’t do it often, so I don’t do it well.  In the future, I’d substitute pita bread and probably bake the fish.  The spices and marinade were delicious, as was my homemade coleslaw.

My mouth is watering...

I wonder if it was close to the Trini version…

Days 129 and 130: Buttons and Big Butts

17 May

Another combo post….I really need to get my act together!

Anyway, so yesterday (Monday) I doodled up another curvy mermaid for my collection.  I still need to fine tune her, but here’s the general idea…

There she is…a chubby fishy acrobat.  I personally love the look of sheer bliss on her face as she does her little backflip…don’t you?

So much for that portion of our program.  Today’s giggle is brought to you by a lovely Brit named Mary Poppins!

In ev'ry job that must be done
There is an element of fun
you find the fun and snap!
The job's a game

And ev'ry task you undertake
Becomes a piece of cake
A lark! Aspree!
It's very clear to me...

Sing it with me now!  A spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down…. lalalalalala

We all know the song, but how many of you have ever really thought about the lyrics?  Making chores fun?  Really?????  Well, today I decided to give it a try.  granted, I didn’t pull a Mary Poppins and use magic, nor did I strap brushed to my feet and skate around Pippi Longstocking style, but I did my best to make something that I normally consider a pain in the tuchas into something that put a smile on my face.

Today was mending day!

Meet my sad little raincoat...

We basically had a monsoon here in NY today, and the powers that be said it will rain heavily all week.  I dragged my raincoat out of the closet and noticed several buttons missing…I HATE sewing buttons.  You have no idea how much I hate it.  However, if I’ve got to do it, I might as well make it interesting…

Out to the store I went and spent a good hour in the button aisle.  I found these awesome purple and turquoise painted buttons to replace the boring tortoise ones.  Now my raincoat actually functions (I can finally button the hood on all the way!) and it looks perky amidst all this dreary weather.  I can’t wait to wear it tomorrow!!

Days 120 and 121: Mermaid Mama

9 May

It’s Mother’s Day…do you know where your mother is?  I do.  She’s at home probably sleeping.  I always thought Mother’s Day was a funny kind of holiday.  Why do people need a specific day of the year to celebrate their mom???  Granted, I’m not a mom celebrating type of person either, but really…Another holiday designed by Hallmark and the jewelry companies!  Did you realize that you’re a terrible husband/child/grandchild/baby daddy if you didn’t buy Mom something sparkly and expensive?????!

Yeah…I just don’t buy into that consumer bulls#&t.  Still, everyone else does so……I bought my mom something fun instead of some sentimental “World’s Best Mom” diamond accent necklace or flower bouquet that’s marked up 200% just because of Mother’s Day.  I hope she likes it.

Today’s giggle is something I’ve been working on for a while now.  In honor of Mother’s Day, I present….Mermaid Mama!

She’s painted on glass just like this one with a collaged background.  Isn’t she sweet?

Day 114: MAY DAY MAY DAY….no really, it’s May Day!

1 May

Another gorgeous spring day out here on Long Island.  Everything’s in bloom, and you can almost hear the sounds of summer carried in on the wind.  It’s also May 1st, or May Day!

What is May Day, you ask?  According to wikipedia, May Day is a combination of several ancient holidays that all seem to be about rebirth, renewal, fertility, love, and sex.  May Day falls during the druid festival of Beltane, the Roman festival of Flora, and the Germanic festival of Walpurgis Night. It’s main purpose is to celebrate the coming of summer and give hope for a fertile season.  In Britain, it’s been traditional for towns to erect a maypole (yes, I said “erect”), which is essentially a giant phallus in the center of town.  Young men and women would then dance around the maypole, weaving colored ribbons down its length and meeting in the middle.  Because, what better way to meet your future mate than to dance together around a giant stick?

I don’t know how many couples actually got together at a maypole dance, but today, Scott and I did!!!

look at all the pretty ribbons!!!

Here it is in all it’s glory.  No, we did not erect a maypole in our yard…There was a May Day festival at Benner’s Farm out in Setauket!  Scott grew up around there, but neither of us had ever been to the farm.  It was fabulous!!!  They had a fiddler playing fun music while we all danced around the pole.  It created such a pretty braid…

say "May Day!"

Unfortunately, the ribbons got a little twisted from all the little ones pulling on them, so we couldn’t do the entire pole.  I still think it came out pretty.

Not only did the farm have a maypole dance, but they also had arts and crafts vendors, food, and BABY ANIMALS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So I’ve decided that I want to raise sheep.  Yes, you heard that right folks, this Jewish American Princess wants to be a shepherdess!  I just can’t get over how darn cute these little guys are!  Besides, it’s always been my dream to get closer to nature… It’s not like I’d raise them for meat, though.  I don’t think I could handle killing something, especially something this cute.  I’d want milk and wool sheep.  And I’d make fun stuff from the wool and sell sheep cheese at a farm stand and be simple and happy.  Yup, that’s my goal.

I'd also have a duck pond...

with lots of ducks!

And a rabbit hutch full of fluffy little angora bunnies!!!!!

I soooo wanted to take this bunny home.  She was for sale, but where would I keep a rabbit in such a small place????  Especially with all my crap…

Speaking of which, I did actually craft something today besides the maypole.  I joined another swap, this one for a little piece of random pretty called a button fairy!

with butterfly wings

I hope my partner likes it!
