Days 254-261: Should I be calling this “My SOMETIMES Giggle”???????????

25 Sep

It’s slow getting back on the blogging wagon…much slower than I thought.  I’m feeling a bit guilty actually that I didn’t meet my original goals of blogging daily.  Maybe I need to rethink things….once a week isn’t terrible, right?  I could change the name to My Weekly Giggle.  Or would that be giving up?  Ugh!!!

Anyway…I’ve had another lost week here in Marissaland.  I’ve had this horrible cold that I just can’t shake.  Granted, it doesn’t help that my pregnant a$$ can’t take anything that will actually work!  It’s taken 2 weeks, but I’m finally starting to feel a bit better.  If only I could say the same for hubby dearest….

Since I was yucky forever (so it seems), I only had the energy for one bit of craftiness this week.  I’m still involved in mail swaps via Swap-bot, and I had a dotee doll swap due this week.  For those of you who don’t remember what a dotee doll is…click here!

Here she is folks!

Isn’t she a doll? (ba dum bum)  I love her little tutu and her crystal encrusted face.  She kept me busy while lying ill in bed watching countless episodes of Californication…..which is freakin hysterical by the way.  I highly recommend it.

On a side note…did I mention that my year and a half old Dell bit the big one this summer?  Thankfully I had the sense to back up all my files.  Someone was nice enough to give us a refurb as a belated wedding gift (2 years belated, but who cares!).  I have yet to load Photoshop on here or upload my backed up files so pardon the unedited image.  Hey….at least I’m back in the saddle again!  🙂

Days 185-253: A crazy crazy summer!

17 Sep

Well hello there dear readers! It’s been quite a while since I last blogged, but this time I promise that there’s a good reason for the absence.  However, you’ll have to patiently await that reason.  Hell….you’ve already waited this long…   😉

Anyway, I had a blast this summer.  I kept super busy and giggled lots, even though I never posted anything.  Well, the time has come…  Here is a visual recap of the last 69 days!

Aren’t the bunny hat and booties the cutest?!  But who could they be for????????

That’s right!  Me!  Well…..actually for the mini me due to arrive this spring.  Yes folks, I am officially pregnant!

Days 183 and 184: The organizing gnome

9 Jul

One of my 29 before 30 goals was to seriously reduce my amount of stuff (and thereby become more organized).  Now that I’ve got a summer free, this has become a priority….so….here it is!   The first edition of

(dah da da daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah)

Marissa’s Organized Home!

This week we will take a look at my closet.  Here is a “before” pic.

My closet was stuffed full of clothes that I DIDN’T EVEN WEAR!!!!!  Believe it or not, I had things in there from college!  Why??????  I kept wearing the same things over and over because THEY WERE ALL I COULD FIND!!!  It was a nightmare.  Not only could I not see what I had, but removing items from the rack was difficult because they were so squished in there.  Shirts would fall off the hangers all the time and end up in the abyss.  Something had to be done.

Out came the donation bags and my favorite closet organizing tool ever……

Slim Velvet Hangers!

It’s amazing how much of a difference hangers make.  Not only do my clothes not fall off of these, but they take up so much less space!

Ready for the reveal?

a streamlined closet

I only did the one side of the closet, but I’m pretty pleased with the results.  I donated 5 bags of clothes!

During all this organizing, I did have some crafty time.  My next swap is another dotee swap.  My partner expressed an interest in gnomes.  Well… could I deny her?

Isn’t he cute?  And sooooo happy!

Day 182: Happy Hair

7 Jul

I am a big fan of fun and funky hair things. (As you can see here, here, here.)  So I was browsing swap-bot a few weeks ago, and there it was…..a swap made especially for me!

How could I resist that?  I signed up and anxiously awaited my partner assignment.  And what a great partner I got!  She’s young and funky (like moi).  I had a blast making her swap package.

Without further ado….

The first piece I made is a clustered flower headband in shades of black, white, and silver.

Then I made a pair of red poppy bobby pins.

The last piece I made is this funky little pouf  It’s attached to a clip like most of my other flowers.  I think it would look adorable tucked behind the ear or adorning a messy updo.  I hope she likes them!

Days 155 – 158: Of blogs and other things

13 Jun

Blogging is a funny thing.  It’s a lot like keeping a diary, except everyone in the world has the key.  I pour my heart and soul into these pages and give others a glimpse into my quirky little life.  I like having a venue to make my thoughts and beliefs heard.  However, unlike a real diary, I have to be careful with what I post.

Everyone these days is internet crazy.  Between Facebook, Twitter, BBM, and all the other social media out there, words can circulate like wildfire.  All it takes is one picture, one joke, one misstep and your peace can be destroyed.  Take this whole Anthony Weiner thing, for instance…  So the guy sends some nudie pics to women he met online…this is nothing new.  People do this all the time.  They have cyber relationships and sexting and all that fun stuff.  Being a politician doesn’t make it any more wrong than if he was Joe Shmo the office clerk, but it does mean that he’s got more to lose.  And that he’s being watched more closely.  He got caught, and now he’s royally screwed.  His life and career will never be the same, all because he snapped a picture of his junk and put it on the internet.  Serious lack of judgement…

You don’t have to be high profile to have this happen to you either.  I read somewhere that infidelity is on the rise as a result of social media sites.  People think that the computer screen offers them privacy.  They can do things through the screen that they wouldn’t normally do.  However, Big Brother is always watching…

Let’s take my blog for instance…I’ve shared my life and views with you all for over 5 months now.  In that time, I’ve posted about politics, religion, society, relationships, culture, etc. in addition to the art and laughter that is this blog’s focus.  I’ve touched on controversial issues, and I’ve tried really really hard to not dig my own grave.  I won’t lie…I seriously censor my posts.  Each of my more serious entries has gone through several revisions before I deem it safe enough to publish.  It sucks, but it must be done.

I wrote a very long and very eloquent blog post earlier.  I read and reread it, each time coming to the same conclusion…It’s un-postable.  It really sucks, but what can I do.  As passionate as I feel about some issues, it’s best I keep them to myself.

That being said, on to the giggles!

Friday, I made an awesome dinner.  It inspired this giggle…

This was a modified Rachel Ray recipe for pineapple hominy stuffed avocados.  I used mango and shrimp instead of the pineapple.  It was deeelicious!

The next giggle is a headband I created.

I don’t know what it is about these headbands that I enjoy so much.  I love them!  This will look fabulous with my grey skirt…

The piece de resistance of today’s list of giggles is my new handbag!  A while ago, I posted about my experiments with woodburning.  Did it ever pay off?!

Ta da!

This is my wine box purse!  She’s burned into the front of the box and painted in watercolors.  I glued pearls around the edge and on the face of the box to add a little sparkle.

and the back

I used an embossed paper and ribbon to cover the back and sides of the box.

and the inside

I lined the inside of the box with shell pink paper and fabric and put a little pocket in for lipstick and goodies.  I’m very proud of my new bag!!!!!

Last, but not least, is today’s giggle.  It needs no explanation…

Days 152 and 153: Dotee dolls!

8 Jun

I have another swap coming due this week, and it’s time I get crackin’ on my item.  This swap was for a mother themed dotee doll.

What is a dotee doll, you ask?

Well, to be honest…I don’t really know.  They’re all over swap-bot, but all the links to their origin are dead.  From the internet, I’ve put together the following definition:

Dotee doll: a small hand-sewn cloth doll with a sack-shaped body and appliqued face.  Dotees are supposed to be therapeutic to make, be kinda crazy looking, and are meant to be traded or given as gifts.

Yesterday, I tried out this odd little art form for the very first time.

So this is my first dotee.  I actually didn’t like the way she was coming out, so I didn’t finish her.  The baby comes out of the apron pocket.  The whole thing is poorly done and rather ugly….so I scrapped it and tried again today.

My swap partner has 2 kids and likes country music.  I gave this dotee a pair of cowboy boots and 2 little babies to hug to her chest.  These things are so crazy…I hope she likes it!

Day 123: Biker babe!

10 May

It’s Tuesday again…time for my accessories club!  This week, the girls and I made funky cuff bracelets like this one from forever ago.  The girls made frilly pink lacy creations with buttons and flowers and glitter.  Mine, on the other hand, was pure biker chic!

vroom vvrrrrrrrrrooooooooooooom

I love me some studded black “leather!”  It reminds me of my edgier days….

totally bada$$

Don’t mess with me!  Those cuts and scars on my hand…they’re not from the no…they’re from a bar brawl…a really bad one…with big men…double my size…3 of them really…yeah…but they didn’t stand a chance…oh no..because my fists are deadly weapons…oh yes they are…you better watch out!  😉

Days 118 and 119: Lovin’ the plushies!

7 May

Back-posting again.  A school function prevented me from posting Thursday, and yesterday I felt like poop.  Just because I didn’t post doesn’t mean I didn’t make anything!

I’ve been focusing on those fat mermaids lately, and thought….why must they be 2D?  I’d love to make a fat mermaid sculpture!  Unfortunately, I didn’t have the necessary materials, time, space, or energy to go all out with clay.  Instead, I made a little mermaid dolly!

She’s the same style as my sugar plum fairy from so long ago.  She’s all done by hand (still no sewing machine!) and has crimped green yarn for her hair.  Even though I doubled the girth on the base pattern, she still didn’t turn out fat.  I really think I need a different material to get the look I want.  Still, she’s be-u-ti-ful!

Ooh La La!

Days 116 and 117: Of corsages and comic strips

4 May

The past couple days have been a doozy.  I swear, it’s like the stars have aligned against me or something.  On top of my foul mood, I’ve been super busy and so…no time to post.  Here’s making up for lost time!

So Tuesday is my Creative Accessories club.  Basically, I teach a bunch of middle and high school girls how to make all the fun fabric flowers and headbands and jewelry that I do in my spare time.  We always have a fun time, and they make some really cute stuff.  Yesterday, I showed the girls how to make twisted flowers into pretty corsage pins for Mother’s Day.

Would I wear it?  Probably not.  Would my mother wear it?  Most definitely not.  But I didn’t tell them that!!!  Besides, we had a lot of laughs making these together…..unlike today….

Like I said earlier, today was freakin’ miserable….I drew this comic to sums it up.

Yup…that kinda day…

Days 110 and 111: Procrastination is EEEEEEEVVVVVVVIIIIIILLLLL!!!!!

29 Apr

Yeah….I suck.  It’s been almost 3 whole days since I posted here, and I have no one to blame but myself.  You see, I had all week off for spring break, but I waited until Wednesday (the last day of vacation) to start any work.  What happens then?  I’m swamped, of course!

I’ve always had a bad procrastination habit.  I was always the one in college to wait until the night before a paper was due to start the darn thing.  I’m the one who’s always crammed before tests, pulled all-nighters, and gotten up at 3am to finish work before school.  I used to say, “I work best under pressure,” But that’s a load of bull if I ever heard one.  The truth is that I HATE waiting until the last minute to do things, but I just can’t get myself motivated to start earlier.  And yes, I always make my deadlines.

As a result of the massive amounts of schoolwork I had to do on Wednesday, there was no “giggle time.”  I just couldn’t fit it in.  Did I learn my lesson?  Of course not!  Yesterday (Thursday), I chose to do some crafting instead of my work.

Here’s what I made!

It's a little lamby!!!!!!

Yup, he was an excellent distraction!  I ordered a needle felting kit from Fancy Tiger on Etsy.  Remember…learning to needle felt was on my 29 before 30 list!  I get to scratch one thing off my list already!!!!!
